How To Clean And Store Your Glasses Properly

Glasses are something most of us wear all day, yet few people think about how they clean them. A quick wipe on a T-shirt feels harmless, but over time it can leave fine scratches and wear down lens coatings. Clean lenses also make a noticeable difference to how sharp and comfortable your vision feels, especially if you spend long hours at a screen.

Whether you wear prescription glasses, reading glasses or sunglasses, these simple habits help keep your lenses clear and your frames in good shape.

The Right Way To Clean Your Lenses

Dust and grit are the main enemies of lenses. If you rub a dry lens, those tiny particles act like sandpaper. A gentle routine avoids that:

• Rinse the glasses under lukewarm running water to wash away dust.
• Put a small drop of mild washing-up liquid on your fingertips and rub both sides of each lens, the nose pads and the frame.
• Rinse thoroughly so no soap is left behind.
• Shake off the water and dry with a clean, lint-free cloth.
• Finish with a microfibre lens cleaning cloth to remove any last smudges.

Avoid hot water, which can damage some coatings, and very hot surfaces such as a car dashboard in summer.

What Not To Use

Some common household products are too harsh for lenses and coatings. Try not to use:

• Paper towels, tissues or napkins, which can contain wood fibres that scratch.
• Clothing, especially if it has been worn and carries dust.
• Window cleaner, vinegar or other strong cleaning sprays.
• Saliva, which simply moves grease around.

If you prefer a spray, choose one made specifically for eyeglass lenses and check that it suits any coatings your optician has applied.

Wash Your Cleaning Cloth Too

A microfibre cloth works well only when it is clean. Over time it collects skin oils, make-up and dust. Wash it regularly by hand with mild soap, rinse it well and let it air dry. Avoid fabric softener, as it can leave a film that smears across the lenses. Many people keep several cloths: one at home, one in the bag and one at work.

Store Your Glasses Safely

Most damage happens when glasses are not being worn. A few storage habits go a long way:

• Keep them in a hard case when they are in a bag or pocket. You can find many styles in our glasses cases section.
• At home, place them on a stand or fold them and lay them with the lenses facing up.
• Use both hands to put them on and take them off, which helps keep the frame aligned.
• Do not push them up onto your head, as this stretches the arms over time.

When To See Your Optician

If your lenses are deeply scratched, the coating is peeling or the frame no longer sits straight, cleaning will not fix it. An optician can often adjust the frame, tighten loose screws and advise whether new lenses are needed. It is also worth booking a regular eye examination, since a changing prescription can cause headaches and eye strain that have nothing to do with dirty lenses. If you are thinking about a future without glasses, an eye examination is also where a conversation about laser eye surgery begins.
